TARGET: The satellite strike on the Moon conducted by NASA on Friday 9 October 2009. The tasker's intent is for the viewer to perceive the actual strike of the satellite on the Moon's surface, as well as the effect of the strike on the area near and around the strike.

Background: The LCROSS mission by NASA involved crashing two objects into the permanent shadows of the Cabeus crater on the Moon in an attempt to create a plume of ejecta that would show evidence of water (ice) on the Moon. The first of these two objects was the Centaur upper-stage rocket that helped push the LCROSS satellite to the Moon. The second object was the LCROSS satellite itself, which directly followed the trajectory of the Centaur rocket. When the Centaur rocket impacted the Moon at over 5,000 miles an hour, no large plumes were visible from Earth, nor from the LCROSS satellite. It was as if the rocket simply burried itself deep in the Moon's surface. However, subsequent analysis revealed that there was a smaller than expected plume, and that water (ice) was indeed ejected from the Moon's surface. The Cabeus crater is located on the southern tip of the side of the Moon that permanently faces the Earth. There are deep shadows in the crater that never see the light of day, which is why NASA was looking for water there.

Here is a better image of the target crater and its location at the South Pole of the Moon. Note that the resolution of this image (below) taken from the Earth is better than NASA's satellite imagery (above links) taken just a few kilometers from the target. Makes you wonder.
